5 Ways How To Sell Photos With WordPress Plugin Or Theme (Comparison)

If you want to sell photos with WordPress, you will need to build your own stock photography website to keep all of the sales revenue. This is by far a better choice than using third-party websites where you will need to split sales or pay fees.

Third-party websites have some benefits as well as some drawbacks. The biggest advantage is that these websites have a large database of users who buy photographs.

The most significant disadvantage is that these websites take a hefty commission when your photos sell. Selling from your own website will have many benefits apart from the fact you don’t have to pay commission.

How To Sell Photos Using WordPress?

When it comes to selling photos or prints online, it usually isn’t enough to simply use a general shopping cart plugin. Photographers or anybody selling images using a WordPress website usually require specific functionality unique to the field of photo selling.

Most shopping cart plugins don’t have things like gallery creation, watermarking, specific pricing for various photo variations and dimensions.

There many options out there, such as the Photocrati theme, which will handle your photo eCommerce functionality. This solution can be rather restrictive because you are forced to install their theme and cannot use your existing one. In that case, you can use a free or premium plugin specifically intended to sell photos online.

Photographers need a few specific things to sell their photos:

  • Fast server
  • Reliable website uptime
  • Beautiful galleries
  • Mobile ready
  • Ability to watermark photos
  • Multiple price lists

There are several ways to sell photos with WordPress. You can sell photos with WordPress using a theme specifically designed for that purpose, using a free or premium plugin, or using popular eCommerce solutions like EDD and WooCoomerce.

5 Ways To Sell Photos With WordPress

Selling photos is not hard using WordPress. There are, in fact, great photography themes for that purpose. Whether you want something simple that allows your photographic work to take center stage, or you’d rather an array of dazzling features and layout options to match your images, the themes will allow you to build the right website for your project.

Sell Photos With Premium WordPress Plugin

There are various WordPress plugins available to help you sell photos online using a WordPress site or blog. Some plugins are free, and some are paid. Some have more features, while others are scarce in options and settings.

In most cases, premium (paid) plugins for selling photos online using WordPress will have better features, more payment options (Stripe, PayPal, etc.), various selling options (by size, resolution, quality), protection from image theft, etc.

Here are some paid WordPress plugins for selling photos:

WordPress Photo Seller Plugin

Photo Seller is a popular shopping cart plugin that has been built specifically for selling downloadable photos online in addition to physical prints of your images.

sell photos with wordpress plugin

The plugin gives you the ability to offer your photos in a range of sizes (the plugin will automatically deliver a re-sized version of the image to the customer after purchase).

Furthermore, you can automatically watermark the photos in your gallery to discourage people from downloading them without paying. You can enable the zoom option on photos so the customers can inspect the images closely before purchasing.

After purchase, your digital photographs will be automatically and securely delivered to your customers via encrypted download links. Customers can instantly download the image files after payment. You can group/categorize your photo galleries into photo albums.

You can optionally enable the copy protection feature, which will disable the ability to select text and right-click on your website’s front-end. The photo seller plugin works completely independently of a theme. So you can use any theme you want for your site (free or premium).

The WP Photo Seller plugin has all the features you would ever need to present your photos online and sell digital downloads and physical prints of your work with WordPress. However, it’s not a free plugin and will cost $68. But it is probably the best paid plugin for selling photos online using WordPress.

NextGEN Pro Ecommerce

NextGEN plugin allows you to sell photos with WordPress without the extra features available in full e-commerce suites not specific to images. It allows you to sell photo prints in addition to automated digital downloads.  You can add custom licenses, specify your download sizes, and much more.

sell media with wordpress

It supports PayPal Standard, PayPal Express, and Stripe integration to accept credit card payments. You can create unlimited price lists, associate them with galleries or individual images, and sell prints and digital downloads.

You can specify as many different download sizes as you like (i.e., sell low resolution of 600px for web use or high-resolution images for print use). Buyers get immediate access to their downloads after purchase, and you get funds in your PayPal or Stripe account.

The price is 99$ (currently on sale and priced 69$). Support is valid for one year, and if you want to continue receiving the support, you will need to renew. The plugin will work even after one year license expires.

NOTE: NextGEN Pro users can now also use automatic print fulfillment service.

Best Free WordPress Plugins For Selling Photos

If you are tight with budget or first want to try how your photos selling business will go, you can try one of the free plugins WordPress repository offers combined with a free theme.

Free plugins for selling photos online mostly lack in a number of features or charge for additional features via the add-ons option. But still, for most people, free versions have all they need.

Here are the best free WordPress plugins for selling photos online:

WP iSell Photo plugin

WP iSell Photo enhances your existing WordPress photo gallery’s functionality and turns it into an e-commerce photo gallery. This plugin will make it possible for you to sell your photos. However, it is not a substitute for a full-fledged e-commerce system.

free wordpress plugins for selling photos online

The plugin is best suited for those photobloggers whose main interest is sharing their photographic vision online and would like to provide, as a bonus, the ability for their visitors to purchase a copy of a photo as a way of donating to the site.

With WP iSell Photo, you use WordPress built-in image galleries and connect to PayPal to receive payment for your photos.

There is no watermarking option, and you can’t have different prices for each of the photos. Also, you can’t include options for different sizes of prints.

Because the plugin uses the WordPress default image gallery, you can’t prevent someone from clicking the thumbnail image to access the full-size picture and simply right clicking to save a copy without paying.

You can avoid this by only loading lower resolution photos into your gallery, and after receiving payment directing the user to the URL of the high-resolution image.

Sell Media

Sell Media is a WordPress plugin that allows you to sell, license, and protect images, videos, audio files, and PDFs directly from your website. Sell images that you upload into WordPress. Assign different license types (commercial, personal, etc.), sell reprints of images, etc.

sell media wordpress plugin review

This plugin comes with additional features in the form of extensions. These extensions are essentially plugins that extend the Sell Media plugin’s functionality.

Extensions will allow you to:

  • Sell photo reprints through a print vendor or by self-fulfillment
  • Watermark your image uploads
  • Integrate customer signups with newsletter lists
  • Backup uploaded Sell Media items to Amazon S3
  • Process credit cards securely on your site with Stripe

CP Image Store With Slideshow

CP Image Store with Slideshow is an online store to sell images, predefined pictures, clip art, drawings, vector images, etc. It allows selling image files via PayPal and selling various resolution versions of the image at tiered prices.

sell photography wordpress

Store settings include displaying a search box, filter by author, color scheme, image type, and categories. You can set the number of columns in the image store. This plugin makes it possible to sell your images in different resolutions with price variations.

Premium features include:

  • Includes a shopping cart to buy multiple products in a single purchase
  • Allows to insert list of products filtered by top-selling or newest products
  • Allows including a watermark on image previews
  • Allows to set discounts to promote sales
  • Allows to set discount coupons to promote sales from specific sources
  • Allows to group all purchased items in one compacted download

The paid version will cost you 49.99$.

Sunshine Photo Cart

Sunshine Photo Cart is a WordPress client photo gallery plugin with 100+ 5-star reviews. Professional photographers can integrate their own full-featured client photo gallery into any WordPress theme to sell photos with no limits or commissions. Easily create galleries, sell photos to clients, and make more money than ever. Sunshine is international ready and works in many languages.

Sunshine Photo Cart review.

The free version of Sunshine allows for unlimited galleries and images and allows you to accept online payments with PayPal or offline. Galleries can allow for password protection, private only allowing specific users, accessed via direct link or publicly available.

You can also set expiration dates on a gallery to help pressure clients into making a purchase. Your clients can mark images as their favorites, share on social media, and purchase straight from your site with ease.

Some of the nice little details Sunshine includes is the one-page checkout, guest checkout (users do not need to create an account), address autocomplete at checkout, multiple shipping methods, and so much more!

For more features, there are 20+ paid add-ons available which can extend the functionality of Sunshine Photo Cart. Some of the most popular add-ons include:

  • Digital Downloads: Allow customers to buy any sized digital download copy of images from their galleries, available instantly after payment
  • Discount Codes: Provide discounts to clients
  • Price Levels: Set different prices on your products for each gallery
  • Automated Email Marketing: Help boost sales by having automated emails sent to customers under specific criteria, include discount codes as well for further incentive
  • Packages: Sell multiple products as a package (great for wedding clients)
  • More payment gateways: Stripe, Square, Authorize.net, PayJunction, and more coming soon!
  • Email marketing integration: Connect your MailChimp or Campaign Monitor account

You can purchase individual add-ons, but the Pro price plan is your best value (currently $159/year) where you get all the add-ons, access to support, and regular updates (the add-ons work after one year, but you will need to renew to continue to receive updates and support).

How To Sell Photography With WooCommerce?

WooCommerce offers a wide range of plugins for every possible purpose. You can use any theme for this purpose, but it is best to go with a free WooCommerce theme as you will be using that free e-commerce plugin. You can go with Storefront, built to work beautifully with WooCommerce.

Of course, you will need the WooCommerce plugin. A popular eCommerce plugin for WordPress makes it possible for you to sell your photos to people near and far from you.

How To Sell Your Photography with WooCommerce

WooCommerce has only a few payment options integrated. If you need more than PayPal, you will need to WooCommerce payment gateway extensions like Stripe, Authorize.net, SagePay, etc., which cost at least 79$ per year.

Also, to efficiently sell photos with all necessary features, you will need the WooCommerce Photography extension. WooCommerce Photography is an addon for WooCommerce designed to assist professional photographers with the day-to-day management and sale of their images.

WooCommerce Photography also lets you create photo collections and restrict them to specific logged-in users.

The price for this extension is $79 for a single site license. A license entitles you to 1 year of updates and support from the date of purchase. If you don’t want separate user accounts for each client, then you can try WooCommerce Password Protected Categories instead.

This is an addon for WooCommerce that makes it easy for photographers to sell photos to specific clients. Instead of having separate user logins for everyone, you create a password-protected category for each clients’ photos.

This saves you time if you want lots of people to buy your photos. For example, if you’re a wedding photographer, then you can give the password to all the wedding guests instead of creating separate accounts for each person.

That way, more people can buy your photos! This extension’s price is $75 for a single site license, including 1 year of updates and support.

How To Sell Photos With Easy Digital Downloads?

Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) was built specifically to sell digital files that can be downloaded from your WordPress website, making it a perfect choice for your needs. It is one of the most popular eCommerce tools for anyone who wants to sell digital products via their WordPress website.

Whether you want to build a fully functioning eCommerce store selling digital downloads or simply add the ability to offer digital products to your blog, Easy Digital Downloads provides an easy-to-use solution.

How To Sell-Photos with Easy Digital Downloads

The core plugin is free and contains more than enough functionality to allow you to sell your own items online with ease. If you have more advanced requirements, there is a huge library of add-ons available for EDD, which allows you to do even more with your store.

If you are interested in the idea of letting other photographers sell their photos on your store alongside yours, then consider buying a special marketplace bundle of add-ons that contains all the features you need to create a fully functioning online marketplace.

How To Sell Photos With WordPress Conclusion

Using a free plugin and theme, you can quickly start selling your photos online and begin accepting payments via PayPal.

For more advanced features, like right-click protection, additional watermark features (check best watermark WordPress plugins), front end searching, reporting, more payment gateways, ability to sell different sizes and resolutions, plugins like EDD and WordPress Photo Seller or Photocrati theme can help you build even better looking and feature-rich online photo stores.

To conclude:

  • If you want a WordPress theme for selling photos, I suggest using Photocrati.
  • If you intend to use the WordPress plugin to sell media using your desired theme (free or paid), I suggest the WordPress Photo Seller plugin.
  • If you want to go with free options, I suggest some free photography-oriented themes + CP Image Store with the Slideshow plugin.
  • If you are interested in alternative that doesn’t include WordPress, then I suggest you check SmugMug review. It is website builder which focuses on letting you set up beautiful galleries and sell your work.

  1. By using these ideas I immediately started selling my photos with wordpress. Thanks for the informative article. It is really very helpful.

  2. Photo Seller Plugin not working correctly. Watermarked Max Preview Dimension (px) not working. In fact, I think the whole plugin is not working as Watermark not showing up! (for example Gallery Thumbnail Template #9) Moreover, I can’t access to support forum. I have written several emails to the Tips & Tricks HQ. As of now, I still haven’t received a response. I am a paying customer. I expected to get help with my problem, but seller not responding!

    1. Hi Andy,

I am sorry to hear that. They should indeed provide support. Please let me know if they replied in the end and if you managed the solve the issue.

  3. Hi. i understand that this is not the place for this, but I have tried to contact you almost every possible way (email, FB, contact form here, etc), but did not succeed. How we can contact you to discuss partnership?
thx and sorry for contacting this way

  4. hi. did you hear about the sunshine plugin? I use it on my site for the last 3 years and it is almost perfect. Made especially for photographers and easy to set up. Although recently I decided to introduce a second language and here sunshine cart fails as galleries generated by this plugin cannot be bilingual.
The reason why I was using this plugin is that all my photos are sold for the same price and in the same sizes so once it was set up I could sell without configuring each photo one by one.
If you could add a comparison or if you could give me your thoughts about this me and many other photographers will be very grateful.

  5. Hi Kasa.

You talk about using free plugins with free themes for people who are on a budget or just want to try out selling their photos, but you failed to mention that in order to install ANY plugins WordPress, including the free ones, you must be paying for a Business-Level WordPress plan, which is currently at $25/month. This price may be too high for beginners who want to try free plugins.

After reading your reviews, some may get excited thinking that they can try something out for free, only to be disappointed when they find that they must pay $300 (since it charges annually) for a Business plan before they can use any of the “free” plugins.

Thanks. I just wanted to point that out.

  6. Thanks for the article! Do any of these solutions allow for inventory management? If I want to sell limited run prints, it would be great to have that option.

  7. This is awesome, thank you. Do you know of any other ones like fotomoto? I love their set up but wonder if there are other options out there.

  8. Nice review, comparison tables were a great addition! I ran across another before coming here to read up, but didn’t see it covered here. Symbiostock, an open-source, photo selling plugin. Had any experience with that one?

  9. Is there an option to allow the client to order a canvas/metal print without me having to handle it? Ideally there would be a printing company that had a plug in. Just wondering if there is an option for this so I don’t always have to be ordering each print and the client doesn’t have to take the digital download to a printing company.

    1. Well, if you are asking if that is possible with one of mentioned plugins and themes from the post, then, in that case, I would recommend checking for specialized sites for that.

  10. Adam Masłowski

    Hi Kasa
What do you think about WordPress plugin “Symbiostock” to selling photos?
    Best regards
    Adam

  11. Hi Kasa,
I am for such a plugin as NextGen or wp photoseller to create albums and password protect galleries but both of the plugins have limited their payment gateways to USD. I need one with Kenyan shilling currency. Can you suggest one?

  12. Hi,

Great reviews! Very surprised Woocommerce have not got a plugin that allows for the sale and delivery of digital photos.

I see they have the plugin Woocommerce Photography Extension but they say this does not support digital downloads?

I know Woocommerce can support the sale of digital products – anyone found a way around this?

Feel very comfortable using WC that’s all and they have great support!

    Thanks in advance

    1. I always try to find plugin that has all features included. In case of WooCommerce, most times you need to buy bunch of plugins to get all features you want and official plugins are not cheap.

      1. hello
I going to set up a stock with 10000 image. I consider about WordPress + Woocomerce + Symbiostock. symbiostocko pro is for free. Do you thing that Photo seller plugin is better idea? best regards

        1. I have never tested or tried Symbiostock so can’t exactly compare those two. I have the intention to write a review about it in future.

It seems Symbiostock is free and if it has all you need (without paying for add-ons) then I say go for it!

  13. I am surprised you did not include the Symbiostock plugin for Woocommerce. It is very robust, easy to use, free, and easily links to other Symbiostock sites to give much better SEO results.

    1. Thanks for letting me know about this plugin. Upon checking I see that free version has some basic features while for more options you need to buy PRO version.

  14. Thanks for great comparison table on how to sell photos using WordPress. You really mention all important features and options.

    This is very helpful.

  15. I do agree with Kasa, thanks! Thank you very much for your break down of different options and the comparison charts. I am always glad to see my posts helped someone.I hope people searching easiest way to sell their photos will find this post useful. Thanks a lot for sharing this content to us.

  16. Hi Kasa,
Great comparison review for someone like me, looking to start out into the world of WordPress as a photography display and selling site.

There’s a new kid on the block in the form of Envira which seems pretty cool. But it’s still fairly new and requires a bunch of additional plugins to be fully useable whilst others have it all in one.

In the end, I leaned more towards using NextGenPro because it has the option to add a lightroom plugin (Envira has a plugin with the gold license). A lightroom plugin was important for me because I needed to streamline the whole end-to-end process for speed. So I can work with my photos in Lightroom and simply click “publish” to have them updated or sent to my WordPress galleries. This saves a LOT of time and means you have pretty slick workflow!

  17. great topic Kasa, thanks!

I am looking for some great plugin for WP or WP theme
which will be great for selling …

digital photo, prints, prints with frame … … …

and which show interior + different photo sizes
    like example

( for different site, not for http://www.iLoveFoto.cz )

    1. Hi Pablo,

You can check at comparison tables found in post and by looking at features each option provides decide what suits you best.

Will that be free or paid option. WordPress theme or WordPress plugin or maybe even theme + plugin.

I cant know what you really need.

For more insight into theme option, you can check post where I have compared Photocrati and Sell Photos theme.

  18. I’m building a site for a photographer and she needs to be able to sell prints. I’ve been at a loss as to what kind of plugin to use. Thank you very much for your break down of different options and the comparison charts. I now feel well informed and can move forward in making a decision.

    1. Hey Stephanie,

I am always glad to see my posts helped someone. That is main reason I write them.

Let me know if you have any questions!
